CIRCLEVILLE, OH – April 23, 2025 – In the wake of a fire at the Nutrien Ag Solutions facility in Mt. Sterling, Pickaway County Public Health and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are actively monitoring and responding to environmental and health concerns stemming from the incident.

The fire, which occurred last week, sparked concern among residents in the nearby Five Points area, particularly over potential air and water contamination. Officials have assured the public that no significant health threats have been identified to date, and detailed ongoing efforts to maintain safety.

Key Environmental and Health Findings:

  • On-site Coordination: Ohio EPA’s Emergency Response team was on scene the day of the fire, collaborating with local officials and facility personnel to manage the situation.
  • Air Monitoring: Real-time monitoring detected no elevated chemical levels in the surrounding air. Monitoring was halted once the fire was extinguished.
  • Containment and Cleanup: Contractors successfully contained chemical liquids. No chemicals entered nearby streams, and there was no harm reported to local wildlife or vegetation. Cleanup efforts are still underway under Ohio EPA supervision.
  • Drinking Water Safety: Officials report no current threat to groundwater. Residents with concerns about private wells are encouraged to contact Pickaway County Public Health.
  • Chemical Reporting: A Tier II report was submitted as required, detailing chemical storage and response actions, and was made available to the Pickaway County Emergency Management Agency.
  • Regulatory Oversight: An official incident report from the Ohio EPA is expected within 45 days and will be publicly released once complete.

Importantly, the facility has no history of prior violations, according to Ohio EPA records.

“We remain committed to protecting the health and safety of our community,” said Tiffany Singer, Public Information Officer with Pickaway County Public Health. “We will continue working closely with Ohio EPA and our local partners to ensure transparency, accountability, and a thorough response.”
