Ford Motor Company is recalling 240,510 SUVs in the United States due to concerns that some vehicles may have improperly secured seatbelt anchor bolts, according to an announcement by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Friday.
Models Affected
The recall impacts certain 2020-2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models. According to Ford, the issue stems from seatbelt anchor bolts that may not have been properly secured during assembly, posing a potential safety risk in the event of an accident.
The automaker discovered the issue on November 5, 2024, and launched a formal investigation on December 10. Upon reviewing records and inspecting the supplier’s work, Ford determined that some seat components were subject to “undocumented rework” outside of standard procedures.
Warning Signs for Owners
Drivers may hear a squeaking or rattling noise coming from the seatbelt anchor or retractor bolts. While the company has not reported any accidents or injuries related to the issue, it is urging owners to get their vehicles inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
Recall Details and Next Steps
The recall covers 216,563 Ford Explorers and additional Lincoln Aviators, all produced at Ford’s Chicago assembly plant between October 2018 and June 2020.
Ford dealerships have been instructed to inspect and replace any affected seat components at no cost to customers. Owner notification letters will be mailed between March 31 and April 4, 2025.
What To Do If Your Vehicle Is Affected
Owners can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting the NHTSA recall website or contacting their local Ford or Lincoln dealership.
While Ford has assured customers that no incidents have been reported, drivers are encouraged to schedule an inspection promptly to ensure their vehicle meets safety standards.
