The Seaquarium, Florida non-profit Friends of Lolita, and philanthropist and owner of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts Jim Irsay have announced during a news conference on Thursday to release the whale.
A statement from the aquarium says, “Today, March 30th, for the first time ever, a private company with marine mammals under human care, and a non-profit animal welfare organization, executed a binding agreement with one goal – return the beloved Lolita to her home waters.”
The company says that Lolita will receive the highest quality care as the team works to make relocation possible in the next 18 to 24 months.
The average life span of a Orca is around 46 in the wild, Lolita has surpassed that by more than a decade.
PETA the group that advocates for animals has battled the Seaquarium for years to try to release the animal.
Plans will move Lolita to the Pacific are in the works, Lolita has battled health conditions over the past few years but marine biologist have reported that she has improved in health since.
