COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has declared a state of emergency for Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Lake counties as heavy lake-effect snow continues to impact the region, with more severe weather forecasted this week.

The emergency declaration comes in response to hazardous conditions caused by significant snowfall, ongoing snow squalls, and wind gusts exceeding 40 miles per hour. The storm has created dangerous travel conditions and is expected to bring additional challenges, including potential gales over Lake Erie.

“In addition to the support the state has already provided, we anticipate that more state resources will be necessary as the week progresses,” Governor DeWine said. “This proclamation readies our state agencies to assist the impacted counties without delay.”

Since the snowstorm began last week, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has deployed crews to clear roads across the affected counties. Staff and equipment from less-impacted areas were reassigned to support local efforts in restoring access to major streets and critical facilities such as hospitals.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol has also increased its presence in the region, responding to crashes on state highways and assisting local law enforcement with incidents on secondary roads.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency is actively coordinating with officials in the affected counties to assess their needs and ensure necessary resources are delivered promptly.

The state of emergency allows Ohio to mobilize additional resources and provide immediate support to the impacted communities as they navigate the ongoing severe weather conditions. Residents are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on local advisories.
