Governor Dewine Orders Flags Lowered for 19-Year-Old Lance Corporal Austin B. Schwenk

OHIO – In honor of the life and service of Lance Corporal Austin B. Schwenk, Governor Mike DeWine has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Lake County on the day of his funeral, Saturday, November 4, 2023.

All other public buildings and grounds throughout the state may fly the flags of the United States and the State of Ohio at half-staff at their discretion for the same time period.

Schwenk died on October 18th on a North Carolina base after a shooting incident involving another Marine. “A Marine “suspected of involvement in the death of another Marine” was arrested Wednesday night at a Marine Corps base in North Carolina, according to the Corps.

Lance Cpl. Austin B. Schwenk was an electro-optical ordnance repairer with 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, 1st Lt. Olivia Giarrizzo. While in service Lance Corporal Austin Schwenk was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.

Schwenk was born May 22, 2004 in Camp Lejeune, NC. the same place that he died. Schwenk graduated from Riverside High School in 2022. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the Riverside High School Field House, 585 Riverside Dr., Painesville Twp., OH 44077.
