Hocking County Jury Convicts Fairfield Man of Murder

Logan, Ohio — A Fairfield County man has been found guilty of murder following a weeklong trial in Hocking County, Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced today.

Isaac Pence, 21, of Carroll, was convicted on August 23, 2024, of one count of murder, two counts of felonious assault, one count of obstructing justice, and one count of tampering with evidence. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 23, 2023, during a party at a rental cabin in Sugar Grove.

Pence fatally stabbed Charles Starner, 22, of Lancaster, in a violent confrontation fueled by drugs and alcohol.

Pence now faces a sentence ranging from 21 years to life in prison. The court will schedule a sentencing date in the coming weeks.

The case was investigated by the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office, with support from the Fairfield County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio Organized Crime Investigations Commission, the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the Fairfield County Prosecutor’s Office. The prosecution was handled by the Special Prosecution Section of Attorney General Yost’s office.
