Joann Fabrics, the popular fabric and craft retailer, announced Wednesday that it will be closing approximately 500 stores across the United States. The decision comes nearly a year after the company filed for bankruptcy.
The Hudson, Ohio-based company, which currently operates more than 800 stores, filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, citing financial struggles, including increased shipping costs and declining consumer demand. Initially, the retailer planned to keep locations open, but in January 2025, Joann initiated Chapter 11 proceedings to facilitate a sale of the business.
“After carefully reviewing all available strategic paths to address our ongoing industry, economic and financial challenges, JOANN and its financial stakeholders determined that initiating a court-supervised sale process is the best course of action to maximize the value of the business,” the company said in a statement. “Right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward for JOANN.”
Closures Across Multiple States
The store closures will impact nearly every state, with significant reductions in California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Nearly 60 stores in California alone are slated to close.
Going-out-of-business sales are set to begin on Saturday and may continue for several months. Joann confirmed that gift cards will still be accepted for in-store purchases but not for online shopping.
Despite the closures, the company reaffirmed its commitment to customers and employees. “JOANN is committed to providing our customers – the sewists, quilters, crocheters, crafters, and other creative enthusiasts we have served for more than 80 years – with great service and assortments and to supporting our thousands of Team Members across the nation throughout this process,” the company said.
