LANCASTER, OH – The Lancaster Police Department has released body camera footage and a 911 recording related to a double homicide and officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening at 1244 North Broad Street.
Authorities responded to the home at 5:29 p.m. on February 25 after receiving a 911 call reporting Kyle Varney, 26, was behaving erratically and needed an evaluation. The caller stated there was no violence and no access to weapons at the scene.
However, upon arrival, an LPD officer was met by a woman running toward his patrol vehicle, screaming for help. At the same time, the officer spotted Varney near the northwest side of the residence, approximately 90 feet away, and witnessed him open fire on another female at the scene. The officer immediately returned fire, stopping Varney and causing him to drop his weapon.
Additional officers arrived and secured the area. Varney later reappeared unarmed from behind the residence and surrendered. Officers discovered two individuals inside the home, both deceased with apparent gunshot wounds. The injured woman was transported to a Columbus-area hospital in critical condition.
On February 26, Varney was formally charged with two counts of murder with gun specifications and six counts of felonious assault with gun specifications.
The investigation remains ongoing.
