Pickaway County & the Prehistoric Scioto Valley — The Pickaway Historical Society has two remaining archaeological events coming up this summer and fall.

After the August meeting of the Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio, I asked resident archaeologist Jeb Bowen of the historical society to explain the events (again). Randy Sanders, retired from ODNR, joined us.

In both all-day showings on the first Saturday in two consecutive months, the Clark-May Museum in Circleville will showcase 70 linear feet of artifacts along with interpretation from the collectors from 10am to 4pm.

On September 7th will be the Dan Schleich Collection from Circleville and Pickaway County. The Pickaway County native has been collecting from all over Ohio since age nine.

Sanders described his October 5th display of late prehistoric artifacts from southern Ohio. He said he started collecting in Ohio in the mid-1970s and has a full pickup truck load of artifacts from the Paleoindian to Fort Ancient cultures.

Sanders also pointed out that a talk on the Fort Ancient Culture he gave at the June 11th chapter meeting is now on Youtube, where he shared “his unique and extensive knowledge of the fish and wildlife in and around the Ohio River Valley, particularly the segment from Gallipolis to Cincinnati.”

Both Bowen and Sanders agreed that the Pickaway County Historical Society displays would be good for kids and newbies to learn from, and the events are all about education. Hear them in his own words in the below video.

The Clark-May Museum, the home of the Pickaway County Historical Society, is at 162 West Union Street in Circleville. They have a website and Facebook page.
