COLUMBUS-State Rep. Mike Loychik (R-Bazetta) sent a letter advising the Veterans Administration to update its smoking cessation guidance to better educate service members and their families about the risks of various tobacco products.
“The military has an established culture of tobacco use, including primarily cigarettes and smokeless tobacco,” said Loychik. “The stresses and anxiety of military life, trauma, readjustment, and other pressures lead active-duty military and veterans to smoke more than the average American.”
Loychik continued, “Not only is smoking incredibly dangerous and incredibly addictive, but it is also notoriously hard for many people to quit. I believe that it is important that we show our veterans there are healthier, less harmful alternatives to smoking, and I hope we can save many lives in the process.”
