CIRCLEVILLE, OH — September 25, 2024 — A 19-year-old Circleville man has been arrested in connection with an arson fire that caused significant damage at Ted Lewis Park late Tuesday night. The Circleville Police Department, in cooperation with the Circleville Fire Department, responded promptly to a call reporting the fire at approximately 11:37 PM.
Firefighters arrived to find a shelter house fully engulfed in flames. Their quick and coordinated efforts contained the fire, preventing it from spreading further. The police secured the area and began their investigation into the cause of the blaze.
During the investigation, authorities identified a suspect near the shelter house. The individual, later identified as Charles Mazurek, was apprehended without incident. No injuries were reported, but the fire caused extensive damage to the shelter.
Kenny Fisher, Acting Chief of Police, commended the swift response from both the police and fire departments. “We are grateful for the quick response and teamwork between our police and fire departments. Their actions today not only ensured the safety of our community but also led to the apprehension of the suspect.”
Mazurek, of 280 Clark Dr., Circleville, was charged with Arson and Criminal Trespassing. He is currently in custody as the investigation continues.
The fire caused significant damage to the shelter house, but the city is moving forward with plans to restore the park. The second phase of the park’s restoration may include new additions, such as basketball courts and a walking trail.
In court, Mazurek was found guilty in Pickaway County Common Pleas Court. A pre-sentencing investigation (PSI) has been ordered, and sentencing will follow.
