PICKAWAY – It’s that time again!   World Down Syndrome Day will be celebrated on Monday, March 21st!   Why that day?  Because 3/21 symbolizes the unique triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which is found in Down Syndrome.

Each year, Pickaway County comes together to celebrate all of our unique traits by showing off our most bright, fun, and exciting socks! Just like this super fun group of special people! This event isn’t just celebrated in this country by worldwide.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), it is estimated that there are approximately 6 million people living with Down syndrome worldwide. This translates to about 1 in 700 live births. The prevalence may vary slightly depending on geographic location. For example, in the United States, the estimated prevalence is around 1 in 775 live births.

Down syndrome occurs in people of all races, but certain groups experience higher or lower rates of diagnosis, with Hispanic infants having the highest rates, followed by white infants.

In the United States, about 5,100 infants are born with Down syndrome annually.

Spread the word and throughout next week get your family together or co-workers (if you can safely) and get a group photo or individual photos of your most fun, mismatched, brightly colored socks and either send them to me at this email ([email protected]) and/or share them on social media with #RockYourSocksPickaway
