NASHVILLE, TN – September 3, 2024 – United Record Pressing (URP), one of the oldest and largest vinyl record pressing plants in the United States, is marking its 75th anniversary this year. Since its inception in 1949, the Nashville-based plant has played a crucial role in the city’s reputation as “Music City,” a title earned through its rich musical heritage and its pivotal role in the vinyl record industry.
Originally founded as an offshoot of Nashville’s early independent label, Bullet Records, URP’s first significant success came with Francis Craig Band’s hit single “Red Rose / Near You.” Over the decades, the plant has pressed records for a diverse range of artists, including The Beatles, Motown legends, punk rockers like Minor Threat, and contemporary stars such as Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar.
Throughout its history, URP has adapted to industry changes, from the heyday of 45 RPM singles to the resurgence of 12-inch LPs. The plant has also contributed to Nashville’s musical legacy by providing a space for Black artists during segregation and accommodating a wide array of musical genres.
Today, URP continues to innovate, incorporating AI-powered technologies to enhance production quality and partnering with Sibert Instruments to integrate optical disc technology into vinyl. The recent installation of 24 Pheenix Alpha pressing machines, along with the restoration of 40 historic presses, underscores the company’s commitment to blending tradition with technological advancement.
Sustainability is also a key focus for URP. In 2023, the company became the first North American plant to earn Sony Green Partner Certification. Its eco-friendly practices include using recycled shipping boxes, reprocessing vinyl scraps, and employing unleaded vinyl, all of which contribute to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting local economies.
The resurgence of vinyl records, which saw revenue grow to $1.4 billion in 2023, highlights URP’s continued relevance in the music industry. “Our ability to scale up for major labels while remaining accessible to independent artists is something we’re very proud of,” said Cam Sarrett, URP’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “Despite market fluctuations, we’ve managed to keep our doors open, thanks to the creativity of independent artists and the support of their fans.”
