OTTAWA, Ohio (January 10, 2025) — Ohio has a new state record for White Crappie, as a catch from Teresa Croy of Ottawa exceeded the previous state record by the slimmest of margins — 0.01 pounds.
Croy reeled in the impressive 3.91-pound White Crappie on November 2, 2024, from a pond at the Glandorf Rod and Gun Club in Putnam County. The fish, which measured 18.5 inches in length, was caught on 8-pound test monofilament line using a worm as bait.
The record-breaking catch replaces the previous state record set on April 25, 1995, when Kyle Rock of Zanesville caught a 3.90-pound White Crappie, also measuring 18.5 inches, from a private pond near Zanesville. The official state record for fish in Ohio is determined based solely on weight and must be certified by the Outdoor Writers of Ohio State Record Fish Committee, with assistance from fishery biologists.
This new state record for White Crappie stands as a testament to both Croy’s skill and the rich fishing opportunities available across Ohio.
