COLUMBUS, Ohio — Tar Hollow State Park is set to receive significant improvements starting January 1, 2025, as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) embarks on a series of projects aimed at enhancing visitor experiences and park facilities. While the upgrades will provide lasting benefits, some park areas, including the drive-in campground, will temporarily close during construction.

ODNR Director Mary Mertz expressed enthusiasm for the improvements, emphasizing the park’s importance to Ohioans. “Tar Hollow State Park holds a special place for so many, and these projects reflect ODNR’s dedication to creating exceptional outdoor experiences,” Mertz said. “I am excited for these improvements and appreciate the public’s understanding and support as we work toward a brighter future for this beloved park.”

Planned Improvements

The planned upgrades include a range of essential infrastructure projects designed to improve safety, accessibility, and visitor comfort:

  • Roadway repairs to address slip hazards, enhancing safety and access.
  • Construction of a modern sewer plant to support park operations and improve amenities.
  • A complete campground overhaul featuring full-hookup campsites and new flush restrooms for added visitor convenience.
  • Replacement of a bridge to ensure reliable access to all areas of the park.

These improvements are aimed at modernizing facilities while preserving the park’s natural beauty.

Temporary Closures and Alternatives

While work is underway, some areas of Tar Hollow will be temporarily closed. The drive-in campground will be closed throughout the construction period, expected to last until Spring 2026. However, the hike-in, non-electric Northridge Campground will remain open, as will four reservable shelters and backpacking sites within Tar Hollow State Forest, offering visitors alternative options for camping and outdoor recreation.

Access to the lake and day-use areas will be maintained throughout the project, though there may be temporary adjustments to parking and access. The ODNR will provide up-to-date information about closures and alternative access via its website and social media channels.

Looking Ahead

The improvements are part of a long-term effort by ODNR to enhance Ohio’s state parks, ensuring they remain both accessible and enjoyable for generations to come. Once completed, the upgrades will not only boost safety and convenience but also elevate the overall experience for visitors.

The ODNR encourages the public to stay informed about the progress of the project by visiting the park’s webpage for updates.
