LOGAN, Ohio — This fall, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will commemorate a century of preserving the stunning Hocking Hills State Park with a special event highlighting one of the park’s crown jewels. On Saturday, October 12, visitors are invited to join a memorable guided hike celebrating the 100th anniversary of the state’s acquisition of the iconic Old Man’s Cave.

The festivities will kick off at 9 a.m. at the Old Man’s Cave Visitor Center, where attendees will receive a warm welcome before embarking on a 4.5-mile hike through what USA Today has named America’s top hiking trail, “Whispering Cave.” This scenic route, part of the Grandma Gatewood Buckeye Trail, offers hikers a journey through vibrant autumn foliage, leading to the breathtaking Whispering Cave and back.

Governor Mike DeWine expressed enthusiasm for the event, stating, “This 100th anniversary truly is a celebration for all of Ohio. Hocking Hills is cherished by Ohioans and is now receiving well-deserved international recognition as a premier hiking destination with unparalleled natural wonders. We invite everyone to experience the Heart of Adventure right here in Ohio.”

During the hike, park naturalists will share insights into the park’s rich history and stunning landscape, making it an educational as well as scenic adventure. Hikers are encouraged to prepare for varying terrain, including inclines and cliff edges, and to dress appropriately for the weather.

ODNR Director Mary Mertz highlighted the significance of the event: “As we celebrate 100 years of preserving the breathtaking beauty of Old Man’s Cave, we are reminded of the importance of protecting our natural treasures for future generations. This hike is a wonderful way to honor our past and embrace the natural wonders that make Ohio so unique.”

Following the hike, the celebration will continue at the historic cabin behind the Visitor Center, where special presentations will delve into the park’s history, from its ancient geological formations to its status as one of Ohio’s top outdoor destinations.

Hocking Hills State Park, located in Southeastern Ohio, has garnered acclaim for its towering cliffs, deep gorges, and cascading waterfalls. Each season reveals a new facet of its beauty, from the dramatic ice formations of winter to the vibrant colors of fall. The park’s history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of Native American tribes such as the Adena, Wyandot, Delaware, and Shawnee inhabiting the area.

The state’s involvement began in 1924 with the purchase of Old Man’s Cave, thanks to Reverend Pascal Bright, known as “the father of Hocking Hills State Park.” This year, Bright was honored with induction into the Ohio Natural Resources Hall of Fame at the Ohio State Fair for his pivotal role in preserving the park.

Managed by the ODNR Division of Parks and Watercraft, Hocking Hills State Park features seven stunning hiking areas, including Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, and Rock House, attracting visitors from around the world. With its spectacular natural features and year-round recreational opportunities, the park continues to be a beloved destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
