Odot Preparing for the Weekend Snow Amounts Expected to be Light, but Could Still Impact Travel

OHIO – With the season’s first winter weather on the way this weekend, the Ohio Department of Transportation is making preparations to keep travel as safe as possible.

Crews in southern Ohio spent Friday pre-treating roadways with brine. This solution, which is 23% salt and 77% water, is made at our facilities. It is used to give crews a head start when snow begins to fall.

The first crews will roll out overnight ahead of the snow and remain on 12-hour shifts until no longer needed.

Statewide, ODOT has nearly 747,000 tons of salt on hand, this includes more than 35,000 tons in District 9.

While snow totals are expected to be low, ODOT reminds drivers to be extra alert, especially on bridges and overpasses which freeze first, and allow extra travel time. Drivers should also give ODOT crews plenty of room to work. Remember, don’t crowd the plow.
