COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost officially announced today that he is running for governor in 2026, seeking the Republican nomination. A long-time advocate for conservative principles, Yost is known for his strong support of Ohio families, businesses, and taxpayers. Throughout his career, he has earned national recognition as an America First attorney general, backing President Trump’s policies at the state level while championing individual freedoms and economic growth.
“This is my heart, my home,” Yost said in a statement. “I work for the people of Ohio, and I love my bosses. From the time I get up in the morning until I go to bed at night, I’m thinking about them and our future.”
As Ohio’s Attorney General, Yost has been a staunch defender of Second Amendment rights and has taken the Biden administration to court over its open-border policies. Notably, Yost played a key role in securing a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down the Biden administration’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for businesses, solidifying his position as a leader in the fight against federal overreach.
In addition to his legal victories, Yost made headlines for his landmark case against a major energy corporation involved in a public corruption scandal, which saved Ohio taxpayers over a billion dollars. His efforts to protect Ohio’s youth have also garnered attention, including his defense of policies that protect girls’ sports and prevent minors from undergoing irreversible gender transition surgeries. Yost has also been an advocate for strengthening charter school accountability and preserving school choice in Ohio.
“After receiving a groundswell of support from voters across the state and much prayer and consultation, I am answering the call to duty,” Yost said. “I will be faithful. I will not falter, and I will not fail.”
Yost was first elected Ohio Attorney General in 2018 and re-elected in 2022, earning more votes than any other Attorney General in state history. Prior to his role as Attorney General, Yost served as Ohio Auditor and Delaware County Prosecuting Attorney. He practiced law in Delaware County before entering public office. Yost and his wife, Darlene, reside in Columbus and have three adult children and five grandchildren.
Yost’s candidacy marks the beginning of what promises to be a competitive race for Ohio’s governorship in 2026.
