Delaware, Ohio (January 7, 2025) — As winter weather blankets Ohio, the Sheriff’s Department is reminding drivers that failing to clear snow and ice from their vehicles before hitting the road is not only unsafe but also illegal. According to the department, snow and ice chunks that fly off vehicles can cause serious crashes and injuries.

The recent snowfall and frigid temperatures have led to a significant buildup of ice and snow on many vehicles, including large icicles that can pose a danger to others on the road. The Delaware Sheriff’s Department issued a reminder to motorists that while deputies are not actively searching for violators, they will stop vehicles if they witness dangerous snow and ice debris flying off, potentially causing hazards for other drivers.

“If we see a vehicle traveling with large icicles or chunks of snow flying off, we may pull the driver over and remind them of the law. In some cases, we might even help brush off the snow,” said a spokesperson for the Delaware Sheriff’s Department.

Ohio law, specifically Ohio Revised Code section 4513.02, prohibits driving a vehicle in an unsafe condition that endangers others. It states, “no person shall drive or move on any highway any vehicle, which is in such unsafe condition as to endanger any person.” Unfortunately, many drivers overlook the need to remove snow and ice from their vehicles, which can result in debris flying off and damaging other vehicles or causing accidents.

“It’s a problem every year,” said Deputy Santiago. “Every time we experience wintry weather, some drivers see clearing off their cars as an inconvenience, but it’s important to take that extra time for safety.”

Drivers are urged to fully remove snow and ice from all parts of their vehicles before driving, including the roof, hood, windows, and headlights, to prevent hazards and avoid potential fines. Taking a few extra minutes to clear off the snow can help keep everyone safer on the road during winter months.
