Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center Issues Warning on Dangerous Drug Mixtures

Columbus, OH – The Ohio Narcotics Intelligence Center (ONIC) has issued a critical public safety bulletin highlighting a surge in dangerous drug mixtures within Ohio’s illicit drug supply. The alert, released today, warns of increasing cases of “tranq-dope” and “benzo-dope,” both of which pose severe risks of overdose and skin injuries.

ONIC’s recent data reveals an alarming eight-fold increase in the detection of “tranq-dope,” a mix of opioids and sedatives, and more than a two-fold increase in “benzo-dope,” a combination of opioids and benzodiazepines, between 2021 and 2023 compared to the previous three years. These perilous mixtures have been found in various forms, including counterfeit pills, powders, and rocks.

Sedatives and benzodiazepines are depressants that induce sedation and muscle relaxation while lowering heart rate and blood pressure. Opioids like fentanyl, known for causing severe respiratory depression, are often the leading cause of death in drug poisoning cases. The potency of these illicit mixtures can complicate life-saving interventions.

“Part of the reason for this bulletin is that naloxone, the standard overdose reversal medication, may not be as effective against overdoses caused by tranq-dope or benzo-dope,” explained Cynthia Peterman, Executive Director of ONIC. “In such cases, multiple doses of naloxone might be necessary. These mixtures are extremely hazardous, and it is crucial for every Ohioan to be aware of these dangers.”

Common substances combined with tranq-dope or benzo-dope in Ohio include:

  • Opioids: Fentanyl, fentanyl analogues, heroin, nitazenes, oxycodone
  • Sedatives: Xylazine, medetomidine, ketamine, detomidine
  • Benzodiazepines: Bromazolam, alprazolam, clonazepam, flualprazolam

Founded by Governor Mike DeWine in 2019, ONIC is a specialized unit focused on supporting local law enforcement with intelligence-driven drug trafficking investigations. The center’s analysts and forensic specialists provide crucial investigative and digital forensic support to drug task forces and law enforcement agencies across Ohio.
