Ohio Sales Tax Holiday Offers Savings for Shoppers in 2024

Starting this year, Ohioans can look forward to a sales tax holiday as part of Am. Sub. H.B. 33, contingent upon the state’s budget surplus. This annual event spans at least three days, typically covering the first Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of August. For 2024, the tax-free period begins at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30 and concludes at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 8.

During this period, consumers can enjoy exempt status on tangible personal property priced at $500 or less per item. Excluded categories include watercraft or outboard motors requiring titling under Chapter 1548 of the Revised Code, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products as defined by R.C. 5743.01, and items containing marijuana as per R.C. 3796.01.

The exemption applies on a per-item basis rather than a total purchase limit. For instance, a shopping trip comprising two shirts, two pairs of pants, a pair of shoes, and a jacket (each item costing $100, totaling $600) would not qualify for exemption since each item individually exceeds the $500 threshold.

This initiative aims to provide financial relief to consumers while boosting retail sales across Ohio. Shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of the tax-free holiday by planning their purchases accordingly and adhering to the outlined guidelines to maximize savings.
