COLUMBUS, OH – As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week 2025, Ohio will hold its annual Statewide Tornado Drill on Wednesday, March 19, at 9:50 AM. The event aims to prepare residents for tornado emergencies by encouraging them to practice their safe sheltering plans.
In 2024, Ohio experienced a record-breaking 74 tornadoes, surpassing the previous record of 62 set in 1992.
During the drill, the outdoor warning sirens across the state will be activated, and Ohioans are urged to treat the event as a real emergency by taking shelter in designated safe areas. The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness is promoting the drill to ensure that families, schools, businesses, and organizations are well-prepared for the upcoming tornado season.
“Tornadoes can strike with little warning, and knowing what to do can save lives,” officials said in a statement. “We encourage all Ohioans to participate and review their emergency plans.”
The statewide drill serves as a crucial reminder of the dangers posed by severe storms. Ohio is no stranger to tornadoes, with dozens touching down each year, particularly during the spring and summer months.
