MEIGS COUNTY – One woman is dead and a man is in critical condition after hitting a deer on a motorcycle.

On November 5, 2022 at 12:14 PM, The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to a motorcycle crash that occurred on County Road 28 (Apple Grove Dorcas Road) in Meigs County.

Troopers discovered that a 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle being driven by 37-year-old Randall Nichols of Portland, Ohio had struck a deer that had attempted to cross the roadway. Nichols and his passenger, 34-year-old Jessica Walker of Middleport, Ohio came off of the bike when it fell over after hitting the deer. The bike and the deer continued off of the left side of the road over an embankment.

Nichols sustained serious injuries and was wearing a helmet. He was transported by the Meigs County EMS to Grant Medical Center in Columbus after a medical helicopter was unable to fly due to wind. Walker was pronounced deceased at the scene by an assistant from the Meigs County Coroner’s Office. Ms. Walker was not wearing a protective helmet at the time of the crash.

The roadway remained closed for approximately two hours during the investigation. Other agencies on-scene included the Racine Fire Department, Meigs County Emergency Medical Services, First Response Towing and Cremeens-King Funeral Home. The Meigs County Sheriffs Office assisted with of-scene matters related to the crash.
