Pickaway County, OH — Pickaway and Circleville Townships are set to vote on new 4-mill levies that would shift the fire department that serves them from entirely volunteer-based to part-time operations. This change is designed to address increasing emergency call volumes and staffing shortages that have strained the current volunteer system.

The transition to part-time staffing is expected to improve response times and overall efficiency.
Fire officials have highlighted that the volunteer base, which numbers around 40 members, is largely made up of individuals who do not reside locally. Many are career firefighters with commitments that limit their availability. Consequently, the departments struggle to respond promptly, especially when simultaneous emergencies occur. With part-time staff, the departments hope to have three people on duty around the clock, ensuring that they can handle multiple calls more effectively.
Currently, Pickaway township rely on mutual aid for support, which, while invaluable, does not always fully address the increasing demand. This levy would help reduce dependency on outside assistance and provide a more stable and responsive firefighting force.
The proposed levy will cost approximately $140 per $100,000 of property valuation. This funding will primarily support staffing needs, with minimal additional funds allocated for maintaining equipment, much of which has been secured through federal grants. The goal is to ensure that the fire departments are self-sufficient and not reliant on the general fund.
Pickaway Township covers around 49 square miles, while Circleville Township covers approximately 10.1 square miles. These areas include residential and commercial properties, with ongoing developments potentially increasing call volumes in the future.
