Pickaway County – A man who was on the run for some serious charges in Michigan will finally face court in Pickaway County after a routine check occurred at a rest area in Pickaway County.

Circleville’s Division of the Ohio State Highway Patrol was able to arrest Attempted Murder suspects who were parked at the rest area in South Bloomfield.  Police routinely check plates in rest areas and in parking lots along high-traffic areas and interstates, because these areas are commonly used as drug transportation corridors.

On Thursday, March 14, 2019, around 11:45 Pm Circleville Post Trooper was doing routine checks of the US 23 rest area in South Bloomfield.  A registration plate of a vehicle parked in the rest area came back with a felony entry.  Two black males that were in the car were taken into custody, the driver Kertez L. McKinney, 23 of Detroit Michigan was found to be in possession of cocaine, and charged with Resisting arrest, Possession of drugs x2, OVI, Trafficking in Drugs (Cocaine), Tampering with Evidence.  Further investigation revealed that both occupants Mckinney and Scott C. Rogers, 23 also from Detroit Michigan were wanted for attempted murder by the Harper Wood Police Department in Michigan.

According to the Harper Wood Police Department, he was wanted for shooting at several people in the area. Mckinney wouldn’t face justice in Pickaway anytime soon though, and after posting bond for his charges with a bail bondsman he took off and left the area. Eventually, the law caught up to him again in 2022 when he was involved in a high-speed chase where he eventually attempted to flee on foot after a more than 100 mph chase, according to WCHS News, he would face charges in that crime and sentenced to one to five years in prison.

Upon hearing of his soon-to-come release date, Pickaway County filed paperwork in March at the Pickaway Couty of Common Pleas to hold him so that they could bring him to Pickaway County to face charges of Possession of Cocaine, Trafficking in Cocaine, and failure to appear. This week in court McKinney pleaded Not Guilty to charges and a Jury trial is set for 8/15/24.
