This week was the second award for the Christmas Light Challenge brought to you by Ruoff Mortgage and ERA Martin and Associates we tagged along to promote these amazing light displays in our area.
ORIENT, Ohio – Christmas spirit shines brightly at the Smeck family home, located at 5855 Stevens Drive, where a twinkling wonderland of over 13,000 lights greets neighbors and visitors alike. Terry and Tracy Smeck, along with their children Alyssa, Cameron, and Mariah, have turned their property into a festive tradition, captivating onlookers year after year.
The elaborate display is a labor of love that stems from cherished childhood memories. “I’ve loved Christmas all my life,” Tracy shared. “Growing up, my dad decorated the best he could with what little we had, and it made us so happy. Then we would ride around and look at other Christmas displays, which are a highlight of my childhood. Now, we’ve carried that tradition forward and expanded on it.”
Terry, the self-proclaimed “architect” of the operation, puts in weeks of work to make Tracy’s creative vision a reality. “She comes up with the ideas, and I make them happen,” he said with a smile. Beginning in late October, the family works tirelessly to assemble their dazzling display, which includes lighted arches—a family favorite. They make sure not to light it until Thanksgiving though.
The Smeck kids, including Alyssa, who studies human resources, and her boyfriend Dalton Ferguson, a business major, help with decorating. Cameron, who is finishing his education at Teays Valley High School, also pitches in, embracing the family tradition.
The display doesn’t just bring joy to the Smeck family. It has become a highlight for the community. Neighbors, families, and even couples taking holiday photos flock to the Smeck home. Some record TikToks or take selfies under the glittering lights, adding a modern touch to the age-old Christmas tradition.
Tracy says the effort is all about bringing people together. “Christmas is about family, celebrating Jesus, and making others happy,” she said.
As the lights glow each evening, the Smecks’ home serves as a beacon of holiday cheer, a testament to the power of tradition and the joy of spreading holiday magic.
Smecks commented on other displays in the neighborhood around their home, I took a drive after the interview and saw many great displays street after street,
so if you are looking to drive around and find Christmas lights this will be a place to get lost in house after house of dazzling lights.
