HARGUS LAKE, OH — The Logan Valley Day Camp, held at Hargus Lake during the week of July 21, 2024, proved to be a resounding success. This annual event, which celebrates Girl Scout traditions and outdoor skills, saw an enthusiastic turnout and an array of engaging activities.
Under the expert guidance of Char Fisher, affectionately known as “Chief,” the camp embraced a variety of Girl Scout traditions. Fisher, now in her eighth year facilitating the camp, was joined by dedicated volunteers, including two 18-year-olds who returned to give back after their own childhoods in scouting, and over 50 scouts.
“This camp is about much more than just fun,” Fisher explained. “We focus on community service and teamwork. The girls participate in activities like card-making for sick children, caroling at nursing homes, quilting for veterans, food drives, and supporting animal shelters. It’s about fostering a spirit of civic-mindedness and teamwork rather than competition.”
The camp featured a week of activities themed “Under the Sea,” incorporating traditional Girl Scout practices such as flag ceremonies, knot tying, and outdoor skills like tree identification and learning about pollinators. The event also included a canoeing experience for the oldest campers.
Fisher highlighted the importance of these experiences: “Our goal is to build confidence, courage, and character in these young girls. We want them to learn valuable life skills outside of school and technology, and to understand the importance of teamwork and nature.”
This year’s camp had a notable attendance with 53 Scouts and 17 volunteers. Fisher expressed her gratitude for the strong volunteer support, noting the long-standing commitment of many volunteers, some of whom have been involved with Girl Scouts for decades.
“We are celebrating my 10th year with the program, and I look forward to continuing even after my daughter moves on from Scouts,” Fisher said. “The cycle of giving back continues with each generation, enriching the lives of both the volunteers and the Scouts.”
The camp concluded with a sense of accomplishment and a renewed commitment to the values of scouting. As Fisher noted, “By the end of the week, the girls have not only learned new skills but also grown in confidence and camaraderie. It’s amazing to see their transformation.”
Logan Valley Day Camp remains a shining example of how community involvement and youth development can come together to create a lasting positive impact.
