In a striking reminder of the critical importance of seatbelt use, Vernon Morrison, a man who once considered seatbelts optional, found his life saved by the very restraint he had been reluctant to wear. In August, while waiting at a red light on US-23 and SR-315 in South Bloomfield, Morrison experienced a devastating rear-end collision that involved a total of four vehicles.

In August, while waiting at a red light on US-23 and SR-315 in South Bloomfield, Morrison experienced a devastating rear-end collision that involved a total of four vehicles.
The crash occurred when another driver, traveling northbound, failed to stop in time and slammed into Morrison’s vehicle, setting off a chain reaction of collisions. Both Morrison and the at-fault driver sustained serious injuries and were promptly transported to Grant Hospital in Columbus for treatment.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, it was Morrison’s decision to wear his seatbelt that kept him secured in the vehicle during the violent impact, significantly increasing his chances of survival.
Reflecting on his past attitudes toward seatbelt use, Morrison revealed that he had not always been an advocate for buckling up. Years earlier, after receiving a ticket for failing to wear his seatbelt, he recognized the need for change. This decision, spurred by a minor incident, ultimately transformed into a life-saving habit.
Now, Morrison expresses profound gratitude for that choice, highlighting how a seemingly small action can have monumental consequences. His story serves as a powerful reminder to others: wearing a seatbelt is not just a matter of legal compliance, but a fundamental practice that can protect lives in the face of unexpected danger.

Morrison was presented with the Ohio State Highway Patrol Saved by the Belt award on October 25, 2024, by Lt Shad Caplinger and Pickaway Sheriff Matthew Hafey.
