Pickaway County – A water recovery has been launched after a possible body was found on an island in the Scioto River.
According to early reports, a call came in around 1130 am, from two hunters that were in a boat in the Scioto River. The hunters reported that they found a partially submerged body in the water in the area of Commerical Point area.
According to Sheriff Matthew O. Hafey on January 20, 2024 at 11:29 AM the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center received a call from two men who were duck hunting, who reported they believe they just located a dead body. The callers reported the alleged body was on an island on the Scioto River just north of State Route 762.
Deputies, Detectives and Fire Personnel from Scioto Township and Harrison Township Fire Department worked to retrieve the body off of the island and get it out of the river.
The body was sent to Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy.
On January 22, 2024 the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified him as 50-year-old Robert L. Hanson Jr. out of Columbus, Ohio, by way of fingerprints.
Investigators learned that Robert Hanson Jr. was entered as a missing person out of Columbus, Ohio.

This case remains under investigation by the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Police Department.
