Residents of Sunset Mobile Home Park in Pickaway County are being warned after the community’s public water system (PWS) exceeded the Lifetime Health Advisory Level (HAL) for manganese in February 2025, according to a notice from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Ohio EPA reported that the facility, identified as PWS ID# 6557187, failed to properly operate its permanganate treatment system, a violation of Ohio Administrative Code 3745-83-01. Additionally, the system exceeded the recommended 0.3 mg/L health advisory limit for manganese during one week in February, a breach of OAC 3745-82-02.
Health Concerns Over Manganese Levels
Manganese is an essential nutrient in small amounts, but high concentrations in drinking water can pose neurological and reproductive health risks, particularly for children. Studies suggest excessive exposure may contribute to behavioral and developmental issues.
The Ohio EPA has labeled the elevated levels a “significant deficiency”—meaning a failure in the system’s design, operation, or maintenance could allow contamination to spread.
Immediate Action Required
Sunset Mobile Home Park’s water system must submit a written response within 30 days, outlining how it plans to correct the issue. The EPA warns that failure to comply with Ohio Revised Code Chapter 6109 could result in civil or administrative penalties.
Residents concerned about water quality are encouraged to take precautionary measures, such as using alternative water sources for drinking and cooking until the issue is resolved.
For further updates, the public can contact local health officials or the Ohio EPA.
