This year’s Shop with a Cop in Pickaway County was the largest yet, showcasing the growing need within the community and the generosity of its supporters. On Saturday, Sheriff Matthew Hafey announced that 110 children participated in the event—more than double the number from the previous year.
“We had 110 kids this year, which is awesome,” Sheriff Hafey said. “We received about $14,500 in donations from groups like Foundations for Youth, Job and Family Services, Walmart, and The Commercial Point men’s and women’s club. It’s incredible to see the smiles on the kids’ faces, but I think the officers are having just as much fun!”
Donations poured in from across the county to make the event possible. Walmart contributed $3,000, while community organizations from Commercial Point, including a men’s club and a ladies’ group, donated $4,500. Job and Family Services played a key role by identifying families in need, and ensuring that the gifts went to children who might not otherwise receive Christmas presents.
The event was entirely volunteer-driven, with law enforcement officers giving their time to make the day special. Some officers even participated after finishing overnight shifts. Sheriff Hafey praised the commitment of the officers, noting, “It’s all about giving back to the community and creating positive memories for these kids.”
The event took place at the Circleville Walmart, which opened its lawn and garden center for the festivities. Families enjoyed hot cocoa, cookies, and crafts while Santa Claus took photos with children. Walmart employees also joined the celebration, with several volunteering special duties.
“It’s all about community,” a Walmart management said. “Our employees love seeing the kids happy, and we’ll be displaying photos from the day on our community board and in the employee area.”
Sheriff Hafey highlighted the festive atmosphere by sharing a humorous detail: the Grinch made an appearance but was quickly “arrested” for trespassing and theft—adding a playful touch to the day.
The celebration wasn’t just about shopping; it emphasized the spirit of giving and collaboration. Ohio State Highway Patrol Lieutenant Shad Caplinger reflected on the deeper meaning of the event. “It’s about celebrating Christmas, serving our community, and putting smiles on kids’ faces. Helping others is a blessing. “It’s a great day to come out and celebrate Jesus’s birthday for Christmas. It also reminds us of what a wonderful community we live in. I’m privileged to serve here, and the outpouring of donations is proof that this is about so much more than just law enforcement. The community has truly rallied around the spirit of Christmas. Helping 110 children this year is amazing. It’s all about putting smiles on kids’ faces and spending time with them. Meeting these youngsters and seeing the joy it brings to their families is incredibly rewarding. I’m so proud to serve such a caring community in Pickaway County.”
Pickaway Sheriff’s Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Circleville Police Department, South Bloomfield Police, Commerical Point, and Ashville police were in attendance and officers volunteering their time.
The Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for its next community event, Lights of Pickaway County, scheduled for December 22. The procession will bring holiday cheer to nursing homes and the local hospital, with Santa and Mrs. Claus joining the parade.
As the event concluded, Sheriff Hafey expressed gratitude to all who made the day possible. “From donors to law enforcement to Walmart, the support has been incredible. We’re proud to live in such a generous and caring community.”
With 110 children served, this year’s Shop with a Cop was a shining example of how a community can come together to spread holiday joy and make a difference. Locally PICCA is still offering to help families in need if you didn’t make it to this event, contact PICCA for more information.
