A $1,500 grant from the Teays Valley Educational Foundation will be used to benefit the seventh grade Language Arts program at Teays Valley East Middle School.
Courtney Gonder, Language Arts teacher, said the grant will be used to purchase historical nonfiction texts to use with her students.
According to Gonder, the majority of the nonfiction texts in the East library cover a historical event broadly. While this is sufficient for an overview, these additional texts will provide students access to nonfiction pieces that focus more on a particular aspect of an event.
“Thank you so much to the Foundation for this opportunity to expand my students’ nonfiction text resources,” she said. “These books will be used to aid their research projects, which focus on 21st century learning and creating their very own website. Students will build their ability to think critically with nonfiction texts and deepen their understanding of historical events.”
