COLUMBUS, Ohio — As fall officially arrives, recent rainfall and cooler temperatures are expected to enhance the vibrant transformation of Ohio’s tree canopies, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).

“The recent rainy weather should help boost fall color here in Ohio,” said ODNR Fall Color Forester David Parrott. “For optimal fall foliage, we need a combination of cooler nights and sunny days. After a dry summer, this rain may benefit late-changing trees, which are expected to display their colorful foliage in the coming weeks. However, high winds from recent storms may have caused some leaves to drop prematurely in affected areas.”

Tree canopies statewide are shifting from lush green to stunning autumn hues, with reports indicating various trees, including sassafras, hickories, and oaks, are beginning to change.

To celebrate the season, ODNR encourages outdoor enthusiasts to explore Ohio’s storybook and haiku trails, which offer a unique way to enjoy fall while learning about nature. These trails are approximately half a mile long and feature colorful signs along the path. An interactive listing of these trails is available on ODNR’s website.

Van Buren State Park is among the first to showcase signs of fall color, offering early glimpses of the season’s beauty.

For those eager to witness the most stunning fall foliage, ODNR’s fall color website serves as an essential resource. It includes weekly updates, unique overnight accommodations at Ohio State Parks, and information about events happening throughout the state.

Additionally, residents are invited to participate in the Ohio Fall Color Challenge via the OuterSpatial App. ODNR encourages everyone to share their fall color photos on social media using the hashtags #OhioFall24, #OhioTheHeartofitAll, and #FallinOhio. Each week, selected photos will be featured on ODNR’s social media platforms.

As the Ohio Division of Forestry continues to promote sustainable management of the state’s woodlands, more information can be found at forestry.ohiodnr.gov. This year marks the 75th anniversary of ODNR’s commitment to protecting Ohio’s natural resources and providing recreational opportunities for all.
