Family-friendly event will spotlight local prehistoric artifacts and open new Ice Age exhibit
CHILLICOTHE, OH – April 8, 2025 – The Ross County Historical Society, in collaboration with the Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio and the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, is gearing up for its 8th Annual Archaeology Day. The event will be held Saturday, April 19, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Ross County Heritage Center, located at 45 W. Fifth Street in Chillicothe.
This free public event invites visitors of all ages to explore the region’s rich archaeological past through a wide array of exhibits and interactive activities. Attendees can expect to see an impressive collection of prehistoric artifacts, fossils, and geological specimens, all curated by local experts. Hands-on games and activities will also be available, providing a fun and engaging way to delve into archaeology.
In addition to the returning favorites, this year’s event marks the debut of a brand-new temporary exhibit titled “Ice Age Mammals.” The display features remarkable remains of mammoths and mastodons, including teeth and tusks, as well as tools once used by ancient paleo peoples. The exhibit offers a rare opportunity to journey back more than 10,000 years to a time when massive mammals roamed the region.
“This is a great event for families and anyone curious about our local history,” said organizers. “We’re excited to bring the past to life through real artifacts and immersive experiences.”
