CHILLICOTHE, Ohio — A man was arrested on September 12, 2024, for allegedly stealing an electric scooter from the Family Dollar store on North Bridge Street.

Officers were dispatched to the Family Dollar at 72 N Bridge Street around 7:00 PM in response to a theft complaint. The victim, reported that his gray electric scooter, valued at $275, was stolen. The scooter featured a distinctive yellow hardhat sticker on the back and a white circular light on the front.

Officers, who responded to the call, broadcast a description of the stolen scooter. While patrolling Yoctangee Park, One officer spotted a black male riding a scooter that matched the description. The suspect, later identified as Walter Brenton, was wearing a dark shirt, blue plaid shorts, and a white hat.

Chillicothe Officer followed Brenton to the pond side of the park, where he stopped him by the bridge. The scooter was confirmed to be the one reported stolen. Brenton claimed the scooter belonged to him and stated he had been riding it all day.

When the second Officer arrived on the scene and confirmed the scooter’s identity through surveillance footage, the footage showed a man matching Brenton’s description taking the scooter from outside the Family Dollar.

Brenton was informed of his Miranda Rights, which he waived, admitting to stealing the scooter. He described his actions as a “poor decision” and mentioned he was undergoing drug treatment and had been clean for seven months.

Brenton was arrested and transported to the Ross County Jail, where he was booked on a theft charge. The scooter was returned to the owner, who reported no damage. The investigation into the theft remains ongoing.
