Ross County, Ohio – A chaotic series of events unfolded on September 20, 2024, when authorities responded to reports of a mentally altered individual running in and out of traffic on State Route 159 and US 23.

Officers were initially dispatched to Three Locks Road, where they encountered Chad Bates, who appeared disoriented and expressed concerns that someone was trying to harm him and his family. Bates, who had recently been released from prison, was reported by his brother, to be experiencing hallucinations. In response, law enforcement transported Chad to Adena Hospital for evaluation, where he was admitted for mental health concerns.

Shortly after leaving the hospital, however, Chad Bates was seen running naked along SR-159, creating a dangerous situation as he darted through traffic and attempted to enter passing vehicles. Officers from the Ross County Sheriff’s Office and the State Highway Patrol quickly responded to the scene to assist in apprehending him.

Despite repeated orders to stop, Chad continued to evade capture, eventually running into the north and southbound lanes of US 23. Officers, including Sgt. McGoye, were finally able to apprehend him and place him under arrest. Following his arrest, Chad was transported to the Ross County Jail.

He now faces several charges, including disorderly conduct persisting, obstructing official business, public indecency, and inducing panic. The case is under further investigation.

Authorities are continuing to stress the importance of mental health support, especially for individuals recently released from incarceration.
