COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife has announced the sale of a fishing boat previously seized from Chase Cominsky, 37, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania. The 22-foot Ranger boat, which was part of the evidence in a high-profile cheating scandal, was sold through an online auction that concluded on Tuesday, July 23.

The winning bid for the boat, including its motors and trailer, was $82,000. With additional fees and taxes, the final sale price totaled $96,288.50.

Chase Cominsky and Jacob Runyan, 44, of Ashtabula, were convicted in May 2023 on charges of felony cheating and misdemeanor animal ownership related to the 2022 walleye fishing tournament scandal in Cleveland. As a result of the investigation, which led to the seizure of the boat, motors, and trailer, both men also faced a three-year revocation of their fishing licenses.

The proceeds from the auction will be used by the Division of Wildlife to purchase a new law enforcement patrol vessel for Ohio Wildlife Officers. This new addition will enhance the Division’s capabilities in patrolling and enforcing regulations on Lake Erie and other state waters.

Ohio wildlife officers play a crucial role in safeguarding the state’s natural resources. They have the authority to enforce wildlife regulations, protect state lands, and contribute to local public safety. Their duties also include educating the public on conservation and wildlife programs, conducting fish and wildlife surveys, and offering guidance on outdoor recreation.

The sale of the boat underscores the Division’s commitment to using resources effectively to support wildlife conservation and law enforcement efforts throughout Ohio.
