COLUMBUS – Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives Matt Huffman (R-Lima) has named State Rep. Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) Chairman of the House Finance Committee for the 136th General Assembly.

Stewart will lead the 21-member committee in developing and enacting the state’s largest piece of legislation: a balanced biennial state budget.

Responsibly managing Ohioans’ hard-earned tax dollars is one of the most important duties of state government,” said Stewart. “I look forward to working with the Governor, all my colleagues in the legislature, and residents from all across our state, to pass a budget that positions Ohio for success.

In addition to the overall state budget, the Ohio House Finance Committee is also the starting point for the BWC, Industrial Commission, Transportation, and Capital budgets.

“Representative Stewart has been taking on the tough issues in the Ohio General Assembly since his first day on the job, and I am confident he will be the strong leader the House Finance Committee needs,” said Speaker Huffman. “Overseeing the finances of state government is no easy task, but I know Brian is committed to moving Ohio forward the right way.”

Prior to being elected to the Ohio House of Representatives, Stewart served three years on the Ashville Village Council Finance Committee and as President of the Pickaway County Board of Commissioners, the budgeting authority for the county. During his tenure as County Commissioner, the county maintained a balanced budget every year with no deficit spending and quadrupled the county’s cash reserves.

In his first two terms as State Representative, Stewart introduced 15 pieces of legislation that were passed by the Ohio House, 12 of which were signed into law.
