Chillicothe police are investigating an incident involving a self-inflicted gunshot wound that occurred early on November 28, 2024, at a residence on East Water Street.
According to police reports, Michael Gabbert Jr., 31, was transported to Adena Regional Medical Center (ARMC) after being shot in the chest. Gabbert told authorities that a man named “Taboo,” who he described as a white male with a high fade haircut, gave him a ride in a black sedan. Gabbert said they stopped at a Valero gas station before he was dropped off near his home.
Upon returning home, Gabbert claimed that “Taboo” handed him a BB gun, which accidentally discharged when Gabbert grabbed it, shooting him in the chest. He immediately ran inside and called for help, prompting his children’s mother, Kayla Sanders, to contact 911.
Officers found Gabbert inside his home, where he was receiving help for his wound. He was later transported to ARMC, where police continued their investigation. Gabbert confirmed that he had been handed the gun by “Taboo” and that the shooting was accidental.
During their investigation, officers spoke to other individuals at the residence, including Shakeena Gabbert, who reported hearing a gunshot and seeing Michael enter the house shortly after. Shakeena also confirmed that Michael was not allowed to stay at the house due to previous firearm-related issues.
Police later recovered a Taurus 9mm handgun behind a bench in the garage, which they believe was involved in the shooting. A spent casing was also found nearby.
Authorities believe the shooting was accidental and that there is no immediate threat to public safety. However, as Michael Gabbert is reportedly under a weapons disability, the investigation is ongoing. The handgun and other evidence have been sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation for analysis.
The case is still under investigation, and authorities are tracing the firearm’s purchase history.
