The contamination was discovered during routine FSIS testing, which identified Listeria monocytogenes in finished products containing RTE poultry from BrucePac. An investigation confirmed that the company’s RTE chicken was the source of the contamination.
As of now, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses related to these products. However, consumers who are concerned about potential symptoms should contact a healthcare provider.
Listeria monocytogenes can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection primarily affecting older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, and gastrointestinal issues. Pregnant women are at risk for severe complications, including miscarriage and life-threatening infections in newborns.
FSIS warns that some contaminated products may still be in use at restaurants and other establishments. These locations are urged not to serve the affected items. Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and freezers, disposing of any recalled products or returning them to the place of purchase.
BrucePac is taking steps to address the situation and ensure the safety of its products as the recall progresses.
