CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (April 7, 2025) — Tourism is more than just a leisure activity in Pickaway County — it’s a strategic driver of economic development. That was the message Elizabeth Furniss, executive director of the Pickaway County Visitors Bureau, delivered during a recent presentation to the Sunrise Rotary Club.
“Our goal is greater economic development through tourism,” Furniss told members. “We promote within the county, but our reach is over 50 miles.”
Demographic data indicates that the average age of visitors to Pickaway County is 32, signaling that the area is drawing a significant number of young families. Attractions like the world-famous Circleville Pumpkin Show, along with a full calendar of local festivals and community events, remain major draws for both residents and out-of-town guests.
The Visitors Bureau operates with funding from the county’s 6 percent lodging tax, of which the bureau receives 1.5 percent to support its mission of promoting local travel and tourism.

More Than Just Pumpkins
While the Pumpkin Show is a globally recognized event, Furniss emphasized that Pickaway County offers much more. The Pickaway County Welcome Center, located at the entrance to Historic Downtown Circleville, serves as a hub for tourists seeking information about local lodging, dining, retail shops, and attractions.
Visitors can explore independently-owned boutiques, new gift shops featuring antiques and local crafts, and an array of outdoor recreation options. These include walking and biking trails, hunting, fishing, and boating opportunities — as well as the new Roundtown Trail, a bike path linking the YMCA, Circleville Schools, and Ohio Christian University.
Pickaway County also boasts two state parks, multiple golf courses, and historic landmarks such as Mount Oval, a working farm and architectural gem dating back to 1832, now open for public tours and agricultural education.
Adding to the county’s cultural landscape are several outdoor murals — one in downtown Ashville and two in downtown Circleville — celebrating the area’s heritage and artistry.
With a strong foundation in tourism and a focus on regional promotion, the Pickaway County Visitors Bureau continues to invite families, outdoor enthusiasts, and culture seekers to explore all the county has to offer.
