ATHENS, OH — Vitruvian, a leading 3-D printing construction company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 23 (BAC) to develop a cutting-edge training program in digital masonry.
This initiative, backed by the State of Ohio Department of Development through the Governor’s Office of Appalachia (GOA), aims to expand access to attainable housing in Southeastern Ohio using 3-D printing technology. At the same time, it will provide local workers with specialized training in digital masonry, preparing them for careers in the rapidly evolving construction industry.
Pioneering Digital Masonry Training
Under the MOU, the BAC and the International Masonry Institute (IMI) will collaborate with Vitruvian to develop a 3-D printing curriculum for apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship students.
“The BAC craftworkers are uniquely suited to take on the technical and design challenges presented by digital masonry,” said Tom Elliot, IMI Director of Industry and Development Services. “Adding this curriculum to our training programs will ensure the next generation of skilled workers is ready to meet the nation’s evolving construction needs.”
Building Careers and Communities
Vitruvian and BAC will also partner with local schools, training providers, and community organizations to ensure broad access to this innovative training program.
“We’re not just building homes; we’re building careers, industries, and opportunities for communities to thrive,” said Chris Sentz, Founder of Vitruvian. “The future of construction is happening right here in Southeast Ohio. What we build today—both in housing and workforce development—can serve as a model for the entire country.”
With this collaboration, Southeast Ohio is positioning itself at the forefront of modern construction technology, providing residents with new job opportunities while addressing the region’s housing challenges through sustainable, cutting-edge 3-D printing techniques.
