The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat, sell, or serve certain recalled apple cinnamon puree and applesauce pouches due to the presence of lead and chromium.
Affected Products:
- WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches (all lots)
- Schnucks-brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety pack
- Weis-brand cinnamon applesauce pouches
Health Risks: Lead and chromium exposure can be harmful, especially for children. Symptoms may include headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and long-term effects like learning difficulties and developmental delays.
What to Do:
- Check your pantry for the listed products and discard them immediately. See the recall announcement for specific lot codes and UPCs.
- Carefully open the pouch and empty the contents into a trash can before discarding the packaging. Wash your hands after discarding the product.
- Consult your healthcare provider if you or your child consumed these products or experience symptoms of lead or chromium poisoning.
- Children with potential exposure may need a blood test.
Additional Information:
- The contamination is believed to be due to lead chromate, an illegal additive used to increase weight and color in spices.
- The FDA is working with Ecuadorian authorities to investigate the source of the contamination.
