The RPHF (Ross, Pickaway, Highland, Fayette Recycling) Solid Waste District recently celebrated America Recycles Day on November 15, 2024, with its annual poster contest. The competition, open to high school students in Ross, Pickaway, Highland, and Fayette counties, encouraged creative artwork promoting environmental themes.

This year’s winner is Scarlette Chaney, a high school student from Zane Trace, whose poster stood out for its originality and impactful design. Scarlette’s artwork will be distributed to classrooms, community organizations, and shared on social media.

The contest was open to students in grades 9-12 across the four counties.

Students were encouraged to create posters using any medium to represent themes like Recycling, Waste Reduction, Litter Control, Composting, or Reuse/Upcycling. Submissions must meet the following requirements:

  • Posters should be on 11×17 paper.
  • Designs must be original, clear, and effectively express the theme.
  • Entries containing spelling errors will be disqualified.
  • Avoid copyrighted characters or logos; however, Rossco Raccoon, the district mascot, is allowed.
  • Submitted designs will become the property of the RPHF Solid Waste District.

Winners from each county will have their posters shared with classrooms, community organizations, and social media pages. Additionally, each winning artist will receive a $25 Amazon Gift Card and a District Tie-Dye T-Shirt.

This annual event continues to emphasize the importance of recycling and waste management while celebrating the creativity of local students like Scarlette Chaney. For more information or to participate in next year’s contest, contact the RPHF Solid Waste District.
